Field Notes

Description:

I came across this dark-colored snake during a hike and all I could see was its tail. It was partially inside the hollowed portion of a tree. I wanted to see if I could bring it out of the tree, but decided not too annoy the poor snake.

Habitat:

I was hiking through Minnewaska State Park in the Palisades region of New York.

Notes:

I know it must be near impossible, but I'd love to see if someone might have an idea as to what kind of snake this was. It had beautiful, dark-colored scales.

OOohh.. that's a toughie. I'm putting my money on the Racer. If we could see the belly, that'd be the clincher, however. Black Rat Snakes have a white checkered belly, and I think the Racers have a solid blackish gray belly.
looking forward to spotting lots of New York herps like this one!
Maybe a Black Rat Snake? Seems like Black Racers usually disappear pretty quickly when people approach, but the Black Rat Snakes hang out a bit. Definitely one of those two though!
Looks like not real! Like movies characters or something ...
