Field Notes

Description:

A solitary mushroom with a purple cap about 60mm wide. The margins were a paler colour but it deepened to an almost black centre. The flesh was white and gills a creamy colour. The stipe had a pink blush.

Habitat:

Damp tall eucalyptus forest

Notes:

This mushroom was spotted on damp ground with decaying leaves and rotting logs. It was badly damaged by insects.

Thanks Martin, my web link ( for this spotting) states that those with white stems are - R. atropurpurea http://www.first-nature.com/fungi/russula-atropurpurea.php they seem to grow near pines... I have another spotting were there is only the slightest blush - all very confusing but exciting !

Nice fruit. Yours has a colored stem but it seems white stems also fit into this species. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/9958293 I found these two older ones in a suburban park, near pines.
