Field Notes

Description:

The are smaller than two inches. Upperside wings are plain, cream white with gray to black patches & show a dark spot on the center of the forewings & upper margins of the hindwings. Males have one spot and females have two spots on the top part of their wings. The underside is pale yellow with a body that is dark above, paler below with long hairs.

Habitat:

Cabbage Butterflies were spotted at Tamarac near Pine Lake. They are found in open fields, roadsides, farmlands.

Notes:

This is a nonnative species introduced to North America in the late 1800s.
The caterpillar eats cabbage and other plants of the mustard family. It is a pest to crops. Adults butterflies feed on flower nectar. They are great pollinators.
