Field Notes

Description:

The Steller's Jay has a very pronounced, dark black crest. The black fades to a brilliant blue as it progresses down the neck.
These birds fly with rapid wing beats and will often screech loudly in alarm when others are near its favorite food source, even if they are not eating from it at the time.
Some hybridization with blue jays have been recorded in some states.

Habitat:

Coniferous forests in the western half of North America.
