Description:
This swan, while small by swan standards, is still a very large bird at 115–150 cm (45–59 in) in length with a wingspan of 168–211 cm (66–83 in). Plumage is white, feet are webbed and black. The bill is mostly black with a small streak of yellow near the nares, the amount of which varies by population.
Habitat:
Breeds in Arctic ponds.
Notes:
This photo was taken near Brownsville, Minnesota at a traditional migration feeding area along the Mississippi River. Up to 11,000 swans may stop here during migration before heading toward the east coast of the US to winter.
