Field Notes

Description:

For the first year of the little blue heron's life they are white. Later into adulthood they turn dark grey blue.

Habitat:

Wekiva River Florida

Notes:

One reason for the white coloration is so they will commonly mingle with snowy egrets for a bit of extra protection from predators. The egrets tolerate the the young little blues until they start to show their distinct dark grey blue coloring.
