Field Notes

Description:

This beached whale was being eaten by bald eagles. Oftentimes bears will eat the carcasses, but this one was washed up on a beach surrounded by sharp cliffs, so only the birds could get to it.

Habitat:

Beach surrounded by sharp cliffs. This area off the island has a lot of Gray Whales in it during the migration

Notes:

We have had a large number of whale standings and beachings in Alaska this year during their migration North, but scientists are still trying to figure out why they might be dying. There are several theories right now, but no positive answers yet it seems.
