Field Notes

Description:

Non-breeding visitor from high Arctic nesting grounds, usually present October-April. In winter plumage, looks mainly grey with upperparts spangled black and white and underparts whitish; juvenile is similar but usually shows buffish wash. In breeding plumage (seldom seen in this region) adult acquires black underparts. All birds show black 'armpits' in flight.

Habitat:

Favours coastal mudflats.
