Description:

Easily recognised by its black and white plumage, long legs and long, upcurved bill, which is swept from side-to-side through shallow water when feeding. Toes are webbed, which aids walking on oozing substrate and facilitates swimming.

Habitat:

Associated with shallow, coastal lagoons, saltpans and estuaries. Breeds in loose colonies and scattered breeding sites across the Mediterranean region wherever suitable habitats occur.

Notes:

Also called pied avocet.
