Field Notes

Description:

Easily recognised by its red legs and long, red-based bill. Plumage mostly grey-brown above and pale below with streaks and barring; plumage most heavily marked in breeding season. Presence often first detected by bird's loud, piping alarm call.

Habitat:

Breeds very locally on wetlands in region. More widespread in winter and then usually found on coasts, favouring mudflats and brackish marshes.
