Field Notes

Description:

Large and unmistakable bird. Plumage essentially grubby white except for black wingtips. Bill long, dagger-like and red; long legs are pinkish-red. Juvenile simliar to adult but colour of bill and legs duller. In flight, all birds look white with contrasting black flight feathers; legs and neck held outstretched. Capable of sustained soaring and gliding. Often seen in large flocks on migration, rising on thermals to great heights.

Habitat:

Nests on roofs of houses and churches and other high perches. Breeds in Iberia. Present mainly April-September.

Notes:

Though you can't see it, as the house is in the way, this pair are nesting on the tall stump of a palm tree, which has been killed by palm weevils. All the leaves and crown have been removed, but the trunk remains, made use of by these storks. :)
