Field Notes

Description:

A dumpy familiar bird. Adult has reddish-orange face and breast with whitish belly and grey-brown flanks; upperparts brown, grading to grey on side of neck. Juvenile has streaked brown upperparts and underparts with crescent-shaped markings. Utters sharp 'tic' alarm call. Male sings variation of melancholy song at most times of year.

Habitat:

Favours broad-leaved woodland and scrub. Widespread resident throughout, although absent as a breeding species from hot, arid coasts.

Notes:

The third photo, I caught him finished his breakfast!
