Field Notes

Description:

Softball-sized egg masses, attached to sticks near the surface of the Courtyard Garden Pond at our high School. Individual embryos are approx. 3mm diameter. Appear to be 24-36 hours old.

Habitat:

Woodlands, grassy marshes, and vernal pools through New England. Migrate to vernal pools for breeding in spring.

Notes:

These eggs are 5th generation from tadpoles released into the school pond 4 years ago. Four large egg masses were found in the pond.The unusually warm weather this year caused movement and breeding to happen about 3 wks earlier than usual this year.
