Field Notes

Description:

This plant appeared to be a tree, approximately fifteen feet tall. The bark of the trunk was rough and cracked, with the wood flaking and peeling off in certain areas. A piece of this bark was removed, and a ladybug discovered beneath it. After being disturbed, the ladybug flew away. The trunk separated into four major branches, which were all of similar thickness and height. The leaves of the tree grew thickly, and obscured the branches. Near a dozen leaves grew from each stem; these leaves were smooth and glossy, with the veins hardly visible. They were long and narrow in shape, and tapered gradually to form rounded tips.

Habitat:

The tree was sighted at the lower level of Kailua Baptist Church, in the area that serves as the playground for the Kailua Baptist Preschool. The tree was surrounded by artificial grass, and no soil was visible above the surface of this grass.
