Eastern Pondhawk
Erythemis simplicicollis
44.824, -93.2433
Field Notes
Description:
The mature eastern pondhawk male is a beautiful powder blue. Females and immature males are a bright green with black markings on the tail (see photo) .
Habitat:
I find these dragonflies near still waters and perched either on low bushes or on bare patches of ground, such as paths.
Notes:
Eastern Pondhawks are aggressive even by dragonfly standards. They often capture and feed on other dragonflies their own size.
