Field Notes

Description:

A pure white fully resupinate very smooth and firm fungus. Cool and rubbery to touch. No pores or gills just sweating white latex. Covered an area of about one square metre. Seemed to be up to 20mm thick judged by pressing with thumb. No noted signs of bruising or colour change with scratching.

Habitat:

A very dark place like a cave deep underneath a huge eucalyptus among the roots. Within tall, moist eucalyptus forest. Very little indirect light. Hobbit world.

Notes:

The clear droplets of water seemed to come from nowhere and anywhere.
The only other image I can find of this stuff is from another local...............

A bit hard to tell about the water droplets. Yours has much of it's own shape bulging outwards from the tree while mine was more like a thick sheet of very smooth white rubber which followed the form of the tree roots it was on. The margin looks a bit different too. I've actually found another one very similar at home so I'm keeping a record of it but it's got the water droplets. Thanks for the link Emma.

Thanks Francis and Lars. This was a creepy place to crawl into. Can't believe I went there. Surprised I was bitten by anything.

Take a look on the entire crust fungus family, Argy - Phanerochaetaceae. Stereum is just one genus of it. It could also be likely a Terana.
