Description:

Annual plant to 2.5'. Deeply toothed leaves. Flower 3"-4" across.

Habitat:

Sun to light shade. Soil variable.

Notes:

Medicinal uses of opium, extracted by p. somniferum were first described on clay tablets by the Sumerians. It contains 25 alkaloids, the most important being morphine and codeine. Two main kinds of opium poppy are grown commercially for opium or for seeds for culinary use.
