Field Notes

Description:

Also known as Yellow Cone Flowers, this is a species of bushy shrub that is endemic to coastal areas near Sydney and in the ranges to the immediate west. A fine-leaved shrub to 2 m (7 ft) in height, it bears vivid yellow flower heads that appear during late spring or early summer and are displayed prominently. They are followed by grey cone-like drumsticks, the small hairy seeds found in the old flower parts. As is typical with many Australian plants, this species resprouts from its woody base after bushfire. It is also serotinous - the seeds are held on the plant as a canopy-based seedbank and are released after fire. These then fall directly to the ground or are blown a short distance by wind.

Very similar in appearance to Isopogon anemonifolius or Broad-leaved Drumsticks.

Habitat:

It occurs naturally from sea level to 1200 m (4000 ft) altitude, and is found on sandstone in heathland and dry sclerophyll woodland. Bouddi National Park has mixed vegetation, but this area was mostly windswept heathlands. Coastal, so very salty air.
