Black-backed gull - Karoro
Larus dominicanus
-43.5737, 172.764
Field Notes
Description:
Large sea gulls with a striking black band which spans from one wing across the birds back to the other wing.
Notes:
Today it was low tide and windy. The gulls were feeding on shellfish. To open the shells the birds must drop the shells from a height onto the hard sand. If a gull drops the shellfish from too greater a height then an opportunity was granted to another gull to swoop in and steal the meal. A strategic battlefield.
