Field Notes

Description:

Walnut sized blister in varying, rounded shapes. This series has three different looking galls from the same tree that show the variation.

Habitat:

Dead Coast Live Oak twigs in riparian, oak forest.

Notes:

"This wasp creates globular, woody stem galls on oaks in the black oak group (including Quercus agrifolia and Q. wisizleni) on the west coast. The stem galls contain the unisexual (all female) generation. Females from this generation lay eggs in leaf buds, which develop into blister galls on the petioles and leaf veins. From these bisexual generation galls, both males and females emerge."
