American Painted Lady
Vanessa virginiensis
43.1101, -124.407
Field Notes
Description:
From Wiki: Vanessa virginiensis is most easily distinguishable by its two large eyespots on the ventral side, whereas V. cardui has four small eyespots and V. annabella has none. V. virginiensis also uniquely features a white dot within the forewing subapical field, set in pink on the underside and usually also in the dorsal side's orange field.
Habitat:
Within a few hundred yards of the beach, near a small pond where waterfowl congregate. I gave up birding as soon as this came n the scene
Notes:
Almost no butterfly sightings during the summer and then in late Nov after a heavy freeze, this lovely specimen hatches out
