The "spiral in the middle" (which you mention in your field notes) is the most important identifier in your photo. This is, undoubtedly, the web decoration of a Cyclosa spider. Unfortunately, your photo does not show the spider clearly enough for an exact species ID, but this kind of spider is always hiding on its web. It is a master of disguise and notoriously difficult to identify.
