Field Notes

Description:

A very hairy caterpillar about 16mm long. Had blotchy cream and grey markings on the back against a black background. There were tufts of long back bristles rising from raised knobs on every segment and tufts of shorter bristles along the sides. There were prominent bright reddish orange protuberances along the sides which also had tufts of bristles.
The head was well tucked under so I could not study it.

Habitat:

Spotted on a wattle tree

Notes:

Thanks to martinl for the ID

What a nice clear shot Leuba. You might consider this http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/arct/ombroph.html reading the description is useful as the image is poor. http://www.flickr.com/photos/dhobern/5424765126/ Good (old) Donald Hobern has come to the rescue with a better pic.
Martin, I wonder if you can help with this...everything looks like a two-ribbed Arctid to me !!. This one fits the description for Paleosia bicosta - what do you think ? http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/arct/bicost.html
