Field Notes

Description:

Numerous caterpillars (moth larvae) of various shades of beige-brown and averaging about 2 inches long, encased in silken webbing.

Habitat:

Pacific Northwest montane forest.

Notes:

Spotted devouring the vegetation within their "tents" in a near-ground shrub and along an overhead tree branch, part of an infestation extending from low shrubs to tree canopies in the Newhalem Campground in North Cascades National Park.
