Field Notes

Description:

Ladybird beetle with spotless elytra (wing covers) ranging from orange to deep red. Pronotum (black shield above head) may be used to identify both species and sex: the two white dots are characteristic of species, the white line down the center only appears on males.

Habitat:

Widest ranging ladybird in Latin America - from Southern U.S. to Argentina. East to the Cayman islands. May be found on the Galapagos. Often appears milkweeds eating aphids, but may be found on other host plants.
