Field Notes

Description:

Found this creature nesting in the leaves of my homegrown milk thistle plant. The green worm/caterpillar is surrounded by these black "eggs" (?). The photo shows the caterpillar and some of the eggs -- there are more eggs on the leaf next to this one. A lot of eggs!

Habitat:

My organic pollinator and medicinal garden in north-central North Carolina (Durham).

Notes:

This is my first year as a gardener. 90% of my garden was grown from seed by me. All the plants are pollinator and/or medicinal. I'm getting to know the various species that are coming to visit. My desire is to be able to let all creatures live and thrive in this space, but I'm also on my guard for any species that could potentially destroy my plants.
