Field Notes

Habitat:

Apartment block, plenty of cover. Semi rural suburban area near a swamp as well as the foothills. Coastal plains within 2km of the ocean. One hundred metres of a watercourse

Notes:

I forgot to change the camera settings and lens. These skinks regularly come into the apartments on the ground floor while hunting on hot days. This was a very hot day at almost 40C.
I saw three possible varieties. According to the reference it should be an Eastern Water Skink but I think the bars on the mouth were not present in my catch. (see comments) It could have been a Southern Water Skink or most likely a Yellow-bellied Water Skink

Thanks Shanna. I wasn't sure that the stripe wasn't a trick of the light. Once again thanks for the information. I will change the identity! :-)
Hi Stephen, I think it's an Eastern Water Skink (Eulamprus quoyii). I don't think the bars on the mouth are an issue, there seem to be a lot of pics where the bars are pale or not present. I think the yellow dorsolateral stripe is the giveaway; none of the other Eulamprus sp. in NSW seem to have it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Eulamprus_quoyii-closeup.JPG http://www.flickriver.com/photos/smacdonald/tags/eulamprus/ http://www.arod.com.au/arod/reptilia/Squamata/Scincidae/Eulamprus/quoyii?q=eulamprus%20quoyii
