Anhinga

Large water bird with dark plumage. Very long, thin neck, short legs with webbed feet. Long , thin, pointed bill with a grayish upper and yellowish-orange under. Silvery-white coverts on wings. Females have a buffy head and neck with a black chin and belly. Males have a black head and neck. Juveniles resemble females.

Swims with entire body underwater and only the head and neck exposed. After being submerged the birds must climb out of the water and dry off before they are able to fly well. They do this by holding their wings partially extended (see picture 6).
