Field Notes

Description:

It's always a pleasure to see them drying off their wings in the sun. Their feathers don't have as much oils as other water birds, so they need to dry them off in the sun in order to fly again. The wet feathers as well as some other adaptations help them stay underwater longer to hunt.

Habitat:

The water in this area was much higher than usual due to recent rains, so there were acres of water and water lettuce. La Chua Trail, Payne's Prairie

Notes:

The easiest scientific name you'll ever learn :)
