Field Notes

Description:

It is next to impossible to identify this kind of moth because it is inside its "bag" or "case" and can't be seen. Identification is really a job for an expert or a lucky spotter who, by pure chance, might see a male coming out of the bag after mating with the female which spends its entire life inside the bag. This one was spotted making holes in a leaf of a Mahogany tree. I watched it for a while, but I could not be sure what it was doing. I think that it was eating some of the material. However, there was a little bit of movement taking place and, if you compare the size of the holes (in the leaf) with the sections of leaves which make up its bag, the size is about the same. So, my impression was that it might be adding some more leaf material to increase the size of the bag.

Habitat:

This Bagworm Moth was spotted in our backyard on a leaf of a Mahogany Tree.

Thank you for your comment, Leuba.
Nice to see where he/she sourced material for the house and the feeding tracks on the same leaf.
