Field Notes

Description:

About 6 mm long, this fly had dramatic colours black head, thorax, legs and wings and a raspberry red abdomen with white lines.
Antennae were short and pointed. The fly also had a sharp blacck rostrum.

Habitat:

Spotted very active around broom tea-tree ( Leptospermum scoparium) in a national park.

Notes:

I first saw this inthe same area in 2014
https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/950956025
This was apparently first placed in family Empididae but is now under Brachystomatidae. The ID to genus and species needs further research and will be updatedwhen I have the information.
