Field Notes

Description:

Dark grey to blackish sponge, of variable shape and size (up to 30cm in diameter). It encrusts the rocks, but can very fleshy, up to 5 cm thick.

Habitat:

Common sponge in Adriatic and Mediterranean sea; observed several times on rocky bottom in shallow waters close to shores; and looks for shady places.

Notes:

Update 23.08.2022 - I believed very firmly that this one was so called 'Kidney sponge' or Chondrosia reniformis, but have found the ID this summer, thanks to website DORIS (only in French, as far as I'm aware doris.ffessm.fr) also quoted in references.
