Field Notes

Description:

Evergreen shrub or small tree, that originated in the Mediterranean region, an area of mild winters. It has smooth, thin twigs, and glossy, leathery, veined, lance-shaped leaves that are dark green above, lighter below. Small, yellowish-green flowers grow in small clusters and bloom in June, followed by black, one seeded berries.

Habitat:

Generally bay will grow in most any soil, but if being grown in a pot, needs moderately rich soil in a sunny position, and good drainage. Plants are hardy to about 15 F.

Notes:

Bay leaves have been an important seasoning in soups, stews, sauces, vegetables, meat and fish dishes. Bouquet garni would be incomplete without it. They have also been used medicinally in a variety of ways, and as a strewing herb because of its aromatic smell and antiseptic properties. L. Nobilis 'noble' was held in high esteem in ancient times. It was dedicated to Apollo, the god of light, and was also a symbol of peace and victory.
