Field Notes

Description:

Large, hairy, gold-orange Bee Fly about 1.5 cm long. The wings were dark at the base and clear on the ends. Even the eyes were orange. The proboscis is held upwards close to the head when at rest, but in the 5th picture, the head is tilted towards the camera and you can see the length of it for nectar feeding. Family Bombyliidae.

Habitat:

Forest around the Mayan Ruins of Edzná in Campeche. It had landed on a dry bush close to the ground.
