Field Notes

Description:

About 1 cm in length. Abdomen is black and hairy while thorax is yellow and hairy. Large eyes and the paddle-shaped antennae give this bumblee mimic away, but the disguise is an effective one as it very much does look like a more dangerous bumblebee.

Habitat:

I photographed this fly at the edge of a deciduous forest and lawn in my backyard.

There is so much mimicry in the insect world; I've been fooled lots of times...grin.
