Field Notes

Description:

This is a fairly large beetle. It measures just over an 1". Although the flash drew out some other colors it was completely black to the naked eye.

Habitat:

Tropical dry forest in NW Costa Rica 4 weeks into the rainy season

Notes:

Taken at night near a street lamp.

Passalidae is safe, Patent leather beetle as well, but I am not sure if this is really Odontotaenius disjunctus! There are tons of this Passalidae around in the neotropics and obviously there is also some renaming process ongoing. Take it as a hint!
