Field Notes

Description:

Medium sized thorny tree with large round green (unripe) edible fruits. Fruit is either bland or slightly sour and mucilaginous. It can be eaten raw or when ripe, cooked and eaten to.

Habitat:

This particular tree was growing in the premises of the Rann Riders Ecocamp, Dasada village.

Notes:

In Bangla it is called Kool...and there are many varieties. Interestingly the local tradition is to offer it to the Goddess of learning first when she is worshipped in February or thereabouts and only then to eat this fruit that year...I think eating the unripe fruit leads to tummyache and this is a good way to deter disobedient students (kids) by threatening them with divine displeasure.
