Field Notes

Description:

This butterfly has a gray/copper dorsal side. The Blues can range from bright blue dorsal to muted gray and brown depending on the gender (blue = male), species and just overall diversity within a species. There is a band of bright orange along the bottom of the hindwing that has a row of black spots. Unfortunately I couldn't get an image of the ventral side to show the pattern. This would have narrowed it down to the species.

Habitat:

Grassland

Notes:

iPhone photo - first image. The second specimen is a little beat up with the ends of the hindwing missing. The bright band catches the eye of predators, distracting them from the head area. This allows them a chance to get away.
