Description:

The box turtle is native to North America (United States and Mexico). It is largely characterized by having a domed shell, which is hinged at the bottom, allowing the animal to close its shell tightly to escape predators. They are omnivores, and their diet consists principally of invertebrates and fruits.

Habitat:

They are generally found in woodland areas.

Notes:

This one was found on the Western Maryland Rail Trail near Hancock. .
