Field Notes
Description:
A large fruit growing on tall trees with huge leaves. The yellowish flesh of the fruit is starchy and silky, and tastes much like white bread. When cooked, it will easily take on the flavors added to it, or it can be spread with sweet or savory sauces or jams and eaten raw.
Habitat:
Tropical rainforest orchard in the Puna region near Hilo, Hawaii.
Notes:
Polynesians originally found this growing in New Guinea 3500 years ago and brought it with them to Hawaii, where it used to be an important food source to the natives there. The trees produce many pounds of fruits.
Due to its longtime establishment on the Hawaiian Islands, I don't think it could be considered an "alien species" but for some reason I can't remove it from the mission.
