Field Notes
Description:
Adult males are white and black with a large head and a white patch that wraps around the back of the head. Females and first-year males are mostly gray or brown with a white cheek patch. Buffleheads are small, chunky birds.
Habitat:
These ducks are cavity nesters so are found in the edges of forests near water features. In winter, they are often found in large, freshwater lakes near the coast.
