Description:
world's largest pit viper, very distintive ridge scales down back... triangular plate on head... black and brown patterns which form consistent diamond like patches of browns (similar to some North American rattlesnakes). This is a thick-bodied snake. This specimen has very vibrant colours as speculation is that it had just shed.
Habitat:
Uncommon, but found throughout the Brazilian and Peruvian Amazon rainforest. It takes shelter in burrows (armadillo burrows in this case :-) ).
Notes:
Deadliest snake in the Amazon and the world's largest pit viper. This 8-9ft specimen came charging out of a hole we had poked in trying to roust armadillos for photo ops. Instead, we got these wonderful pics of this splendid snake.
