Caper Berry
Capparis sinaica
28.4956, 34.5159
Field Notes
Description:
Ripe and maturing fruit of the caper bush
Habitat:
Desert wadis; This particular plant is growing in my desert garden and was grown from seeds collected in the wild.
Notes:
Caper Berries are usually pickled and eaten by the Bedouin. Apparently, they are also eaten fresh. My young Bedouin neighbors saw this in my garden and insisted we eat it, which we did, with the following instructions - scrape the flesh and seeds out with your teeth, suck on the flesh but do not chew the seeds because they will be spicy (hot mustard-like, I assume), and swallow. Next time perhaps I will chew a seed and see how hot they are!
