Field Notes

Description:

Ten very narrow, finely conical casemoths about 35mm long.

Habitat:

These were on a robust but well weathered suburban lamp post over about 3 metres length. Post was probably made from a hardwood eucalyptus like 'mountain ash'.

Notes:

The cases on these certainly appeared to be made of the lamp post timber. They were well disguised. At first I thought they were just large splinters until I pushed at them a bit. <br>

Yes I was wondering those things Martin. Maybe they were lost or misguided and maybe they should be almost spherical but are starving :) It sure didn't look natural. I counted them again tonight.. 16 and some were up to 5 metres up from the ground. And that pole looks incredibly un-appetising.

Fascinating Argy Bee. What do you suppose they are feeding on? Fungus? Dead wood?
