Field Notes

Description:

An abandoned "log-cabin" case of a New Guinea species of casemoth (bagworm moth), family Psychidae.

Habitat:

Typically I see these on Bougainvillea but this specimen was observed on the fruiting structure of a palm tree. Found in in a large semi-urban yard & garden adjacent to a disturbed remnant patch of forest in the equatorial tropics of northern New Guinea.

Thanks Lauren! They're all amazing, each species with it's own design. :-)
Great series Scott! Love these things. So amazing that they can do this with such precision. The ones I've been finding make kind of messy cases with anything they encounter to stick on. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/36556018/fullscreen http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/40822004/fullscreen http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/38449155/fullscreen
