Field Notes

Description:

Daisy family - Asteraceae. Perennial, 4' tall, bearing 1-3 blue flower-heads in axils along leafy hairy stem with milky sap. Head 1" wide, 16 or more ray flowers only. Corolla square-tipped, 5-notched. Calyx pappus of miute scales. Stamens 5, encircle style. Flowers from June to September. (per Wildflowers of Door County by Paul and Marilyn Mahlberg)

Habitat:

These flowers were scattered along a berm that was dry to the bone. The grass was browned out after 4 consecutive days of 100 F degrees in Chicago. Yet, several plants were in bloom.
