Field Notes

Description:

There are many types of chipmunks, 26 to be exact and they range from colour to size. A few of which include: Alpine Chipmunks, their colour is light and grey with some light and dark marks on their cheeks, Eastern Chipmunks, they have a reddish brown coat and light brown strips on their back.
Chipmunks share the environment with many other animals, including a mink, (these are small, long, and fuzzy creatures.)
Chipmunks have a parasitism relationship with an owl (which is when one organism benefits and the other is harmed). Owls are their predator so its a positive result for them and a negative result for chipmunks.
When winter begins, the chipmunk goes into its burrow to stay. Their heartbeats and breathing slow down and their body temperatures drop really low. With their bodies slowing down so much, the chipmunk needs less food to stay alive.
To reproduce these little creatures use sexual reproduction. This takes place near the female's burrow where several males may compete for a female, and a male may mate with more than one female during one breeding season.

Habitat:

These chipmunks like to live in the woods or in low shrubs. They like pine forests and rocky places, too. They like to eat nuts, seeds, and berries and their enemies mainly include hawks, minks, weasels, coyotes, martens, foxes, and snakes. When the environment changes chipmunks start preparing for it by hoarding nuts under the nest so that it's handy when he gets hungry during the winter. They also store seeds and nuts in their burrows.
