Description:
Common fig is a multi-trunked shrub or tree that grows to about 10 meters in height. It has smooth gray bark and fragrant leaves. The leaves are large, broad and deeply incised with 3-5 lobes. Each lobe has its own central vein. The upper surface is rough to the touch with little stiff hairs. It bears an edible fig that is pear shape and a favorite food of some birds.
Habitat:
Found in sunny areas near water in the South Eastern United States.
Notes:
The edible fig is one of the first plants that was cultivated by humans. It requires wasp pollination of a particular species of wasp to produce seeds.
