Common small bat
4.73618, 116.973
Field Notes
Description:
The common small bat species that fly at nights to catch nocturnal insects. Could be either a Megadermatidae or Vespertilionidae.
Central body smaller than an adult's palm. Small ears and bright pink nose. They fly so swiftly and quietly than I am the only one among my friends who noticed them. They started appearing early in the evening before the sun could fully set. Fly around the hostel and around each other. Sometimes their chattering (echolocation sounds) can be heard.
Habitat:
Fly around the hostels (rest houses) of Maliau Basin. Sleep and nurture their youngs inside the electrical board seen in the 2nd photo. They are small enough to fit into the narrow hole on top of the board.
Notes:
I am not good in photographing bats because my camera is not designed to do so. Fortunately they are predictable, flying around the same location several times so I just aimed my camera at that location and used flash as soon as they flew past. I am not very good in bats identification so feel free to give id suggestion on this one. >>>Map accuracy : 5km diameter.
