Field Notes

Description:

Recognised by all-black plumage and white bill and frontal shield to head. Has lobed toes which facilitate swimming. Utters distinctive, loud 'kwoot' call. Feeds by upending or making shallow dives in water but also grazes on waterside grass. Builds mound nest of waterplants, ofter in full view.

Habitat:

Favours lakes and marshes with open water during breeding season. At other times of year, also found on reservoirs, usually in sizeable flocks. Locally common resident throughout the region, wherever suitable habitat occur; more widespread in winter.
